I've had two separate conversations the past two weeks: One with a fellow Republican, the other with a Liberal girl I just started dating.
Both are of the opinion that the United States still has a racial component that would prevent the election of a black man to the American Presidency.
I'm not sure I agree, but I do believe that if Joe Lieberman was on the GOP Presidential ticket, the amount of hatred and anti-semitism we would see would be unrivaled.

Blind hatred of Mormonism, Judaism, or being black are all equally distasteful and in the end, quite irrational.
As an optimist, I have to imagine that Americans are better than that.
Your friends are more cynical. But on this I'd almost rather be naive than cynical.
